Course Descriptions

MC Kimball and Associates, LLC has provided Basic, In-Service, Advanced Officer, and Perishable Skills Training since 1989.  Our classes have been taught statewide to local law enforcement, supervisory level law enforcement, middle management law enforcement, executive level law enforcement, probation, parole, juvenile institutions, code enforcement, military police, federal police, federal law enforcement.

Special threats

This class explores the times that you can be most vulnerable and how to avoid deadly confrontations, accidents and compromising situations, while at the same time elevating situational awareness and maintaining vigilance. The curriculum includes viable options for the student to avail themselves of, beginning with the recognition of threats, transitions, hostile and aggressive behaviors and the different forms of complacency. The student will be exposed to safety issues involving environments in the office, field, and away from work. Students will also look at techniques to survive the aftermath of a critical incident. A variety of safety resources will be provided and explored.

 

Tactical Communications

  2. Enhance Conflict Management to assist employees in preventing confrontations from becoming volatile situations.
  3. Enhance Professionalism and assist employees in recognizing the impact their words have on the public.

Tactical Communications teaches the art of persuasion using specific communication strategies that allow the user to use their presence and words to redirect another’s behavior and to generate voluntary compliance.

The course embodies a philosophy that maintains how to be better prepared in a verbal encounter, how to listen and speak more effectively, how to engage others through empathy and how to avoid the most common conversational mistakes.

Tactical Communications is a perishable skill and is taught in a continued building block style to promote problem solving, decision making and conflict management skills. Perishable skills are those skills if not repeated or reviewed on a regular basis are skills that are lost.  Regarding risk management and assessment, perishable skills which have low frequency of use and a higher probability of complaint or liability are the skills which should be reviewed most often.

 

Contact Control and Defense

This introductory seminar is about Contact Control Defense, which is an optimal training solution to such difficult problems as handling violent assaults in confined areas.  This course will enhance the student’s awareness of weaponless defense against sudden assaults by contact weapons at close quarters – approximately six (6) to eight (8) feet. This is the “no man’s land” between use of less-than-lethal-force and use of lethal force. Whether the student is in the middle of apprehending a suspect or simply standing in a field interview position and is suddenly attacked by subject(s) wielding a contact weapon such as a screwdriver, baseball bat or a pair of scissors there is no time to deploy other options. This course provides the immediate and optimum solution for close quarter and confined area defense options using gross motors skills strategies to resolve self defense issues.

This class is an simple yet effective class both for the everyday person and for the advance officer dealing with immediate control needs.

 

Dynamic Response to Situational Awareness

Ever wonder what skills you might call upon if you were verbally assaulted?  What are your options should you encounter a surprise aggressive physical assault?  How would you recognize an assault that is developing against you?  How would you create distance or place yourself into a safety zone to avoid the physical assault?  What do you do in close quarters with a rapid evolving encounter?  Can you utilize the tactical verbal diffusing technique of the 5-step process from tactical communications?

Dynamic Response to Situational Awareness provides the students with options and a platform from which to practice their response under controlled conditions simulating rapid evolving situations similar to those encountered in the field.   Scenario based training provides real life field experiences and an opportunity to utilize tactical communications to diffuse an incident, and principals of exiting a physically hostile situation to create distance barriers.

Dynamic Response to Situational Awareness will provide the student with an ongoing enhanced building block style of training that dove tails, directly relates too and transitions beyond Safety and Survival and Tactical Communications giving the students active components to utilize to avoid physical confrontational situations.  Students are required to participate in both verbal and physical activities demonstrating the curriculum.  A variety of visual aids, lecture, audio and physical demonstrations are provided, in a building block style, for the student to learn from.  Students are asked to participate, share experiences, and solutions to real life events.

 

Management of Influenced Behavior

  5. Management and communication of different personality types
  6. Management of difficult people
  7. Management of aggressive behavior

 

Success with different personality types depends on your ability to manage different situations and personalities.  But how often do we practice for management of personalities under the influence?   Whether a personality is under the influence of alcohol, anger, drugs, or is chronically mentally ill, there are certain rules that apply to each situation and certain rules that should not be violated to increase both success and safety when managing influenced behavior.  Recognizing the traits of influenced behavior and understanding and practicing the base rules will increase safety and success.

 

Safety and Situational Awareness

This class is designed to give the student a heightened state of awareness both on the job and off the job.  The class explores the times that we can be most vulnerable, how to avoid confrontation, and how to avoid accidents and compromising situations while elevating awareness and maintaining vigilance.  The curriculum explores viable options for the student to avail themselves of beginning with the recognition of transitions, and elevation of awareness.   Also explored during the class will be the indicators of aggressive or hostile body language.  A variety of resources are explored for the student to utilize.

At the conclusion of the class, the student will have a greater understanding of the potential threats that they face both on a daily basis and during special events or operations.  Students will be up-dated on current trends being utilized by the criminal element to compromise the safety of personnel.  The student will be provided with options that they may choose to utilize in a variety of situations and that will enhance their situational awareness.

This course is designed to enable professionals to enhance their ability to gain information and determine the truth through the interview process. Skills are taught to enable detection of deception by analysis of non-verbal and verbal communication.

The goal of an interview is to obtain information.  The definition of an interview is the asking of questions without stress.  Being able to have success in the interview process with different personality types depends on your ability to manage different situations and personalities during the interview process and to understand the differences between and interview and an interrogation.

Instructor Commander Mike Kimball (retired) has over 30 years of law enforcement experience and is a court certified, subject matter expert in criminal gangs. He is currently the regional representative for the Northern California Gang Investigators Association and serves as a consultant to various government organizations in addressing gang problems in their respective areas.

There is no single “profile” of risk factors that accurately determines the “violent intruder”. Preventing violence is a top priority today. A viable approach is that of Behavioral Threat Assessment, which uses a set of strategies or pathways to determine the credibility and seriousness of a threat and the likelihood that it will be carried out.

This process considers a full range of relevant factors and provides appropriate interventions for the potential offender (s). Perhaps most critical to keep in mind is that no single factor leads to violence. Multiple factors can cause a person to become violent. Psychological Stress Survival

Our jobs demand that we stay alert and aware, constantly assessing situations and surroundings for the protection of others. We develop a state of hyper vigilance that other professions do not encounter. We may go hours or days without anything ever happening. Being in a state of hyper vigilance can cause side effects that affect us similar to P.T.S.D. Nightmares, flashbacks, anger, concentration problems, emotional detachment, avoidance of people and places, fear, emotional anticipation, anxiet. These are some of the signs and symptoms of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

As many as one in three who serve may fall victim to PTSD a condition that can lead to depression, addictions, eating disorders, family and job conflicts.
