Effective Leadership

1. My goal is to make my team members more effective – and prepare them to become my bosses through the use of the 5 “E”s. Empathize, Encourage, Educate, Empower, and Expect. ~Freddie Cogburn, Maryville, Tennessee

2. Effective leaders understand how their employees process and retain information. I use a “5, 4, 3, 2, 1 approach” that has improved my overall results tremendously. I work in a call center and my team of specialists takes insurance claims from across the country. We were struggling with compliance and quality assurance until I put this plan in place, and we are now number one in our office.

I send the same important information 5 times (i.e., daily) for a week in different formats: emails, banners, cards on their desk, notes written on bananas, etc. The following week, I send it 4 times, the third week, 3 times and so on. When I get down to 1, I send out the information once a week for a month. Afterwards, they can recall the information immediately – even in stressful situations. This has increased confidence in their abilities, and we have built those small successes into something more powerful. ~Charlene Djurdjevic, Madison, Wisconsin

3. Effective and respected leaders take responsibility for the actions and work of their team. When it comes to work performance and behavior, the good, the bad, and the ugly ultimately are all your responsibility. If individuals on your team misstep, they need to know that you will work with them to make any necessary adjustments and move on – not complain about them to others.  ~Debra Newman, Toronto, Ontario

“Feedback is the breakfast of champions.” Armed with powerful intelligence, leaders at all levels are able to turn this information into action and get results for themselves and their organizations.
